The amount of independent reading is declining among many students and yet studies suggests that “students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not” (Walker 2013, p. 185). In addition, the increased curricular demands make it difficult to find time for silent independent reading especially in secondary classrooms. Many students read less or stop reading all together when they move into middle school. This website explores ways in which to motivate and inspire students to become independent readers and to instill the life habits of readers in all children.
